Richard Osborne Electrical Services - Local Electrician - Safety in the Home

The wiring regulations (BS7671 - 18th Edition) that we have to work to are in place to ensure when electricity is used in the home, it is used is such a manor that it does not cause harm to persons or buildings.

To make sure that your home is a safe as possible there are particular measures that you can take. The first is to ensure that your home is periodically inspected, this is now called a "Electrical Installation Condition Report" it used to be called a Periodic Inspection. Landlords are advised to have this inspection carried out in order to prove that they are carrying out their 'duty of care' to their tenants. It is also important that home owners also have these checks done.

Even though your house may have an old type of fuse box, it does not mean that it is dangerous, our wiring regulations still allow for these old types of fuses. Regulations are always being updated in order to make electrical installations safer. Current regulations now state that new houses and new work in existing houses conforms to these regulations.

Improvements that can be made to houses are to ensure that there is a main earth terminal, bonding to gas and water pipes, installation of switchable MCB's (Fuses) and the installation of RCD protection. When inspecting a property we also check to ensure that existing wiring switches and accessories are safe to continue using.
